Around March I started checking in with my father in law and adding my son to the call. I had heard he has a pretty big case of what we call a dad sense of humor. When he was younger he documented the jokes that my husband told as a 5 year old and they were some doozies. My son, as any kid, is learning humor from the adults around him in the same way. We are trying to document a few of his jokes as well. I looked up 100 knock knock jokes and my son and I took turns telling them over the phone. A few days ago I received a letter from my father in law who prefers to go by OGD (that stands for Old Gran Dad, not Original Gangsta Anything). I also don’t actually call him this to his face purely to mess with him. Inside were a few detailed and hand typed knock-knocks. This inspired me.
OGD is about to get a few knock-knock ransom notes in return for his efforts. I took this moment to motivate a letter search through whatever magazines I didn’t mari-kon. First born and I teamed up to cut out the different colorful letters to use for this project. After the letters were cut out I asked him if he could use his sight words for parts of his joke. He was able to put together the entire last line. This project was quick and had the motivating factor of connecting with OGD. I was also able to facilitate a discussion on the different fonts that magazines use. Overall, I loved doing this and I think I might frame one for our play room as a nice memory.
Omg- OGD! I had no idea he went by that. Sounds like a great project for kids!
